Express Yourself

The Clyfford Still Museum might just be jumping on the bandwagon by presenting its new show, Vincent/Clyfford, as a prelude to the Denver Art Museum's Van Gogh blockbuster, which opens in October. But Still Museum director Dean Sobel thinks viewers will find that the connections between the work of Vincent Van Gogh and that of Clyfford Still comprise something deeper than "superficial" visual parallels.

First, he says, the comparative exhibit, which pairs similar images by both artists, goes on to explore the larger "relationship between artists, generally." And the evidence is rich: "It goes beyond mere influence -- though there was some of that. The interesting thing about our two artists is how they had similar backgrounds, upbringing and connections to farming and the earth, agrarian life. And they had similar independent sensibilities." Ultimately, he thinks, the public will see the broader manifestations of the comparison made, with hands-on help at interactive kiosks and on iPads.
