Snowflakes to Melt You

Wooden Snowflakes offers a new interpretation of the timeless holiday tale: A grumpy character with a hardened heart meets someone who helps him or her believe in the magic of Christmas. Rather than Scrooge or the Grinch, however, the non-believer in Catherine Bush’s play is a woman named Eve Lawson. The bitter forty-year-old crashes her car into a tree on Christmas Eve and waits for the tow truck in the home of Simon Peter Whitaker, a woodcarver who just happens to be dressed in a Santa suit.

“Simon absolutely believes in Santa Claus and the magic of Christmas and love and God and all things wonderful,” says Patricia Wells, marketing director at the Aurora Fox, where the play is making its regional premiere tonight. “And Eve, at this point in her life, is rather cynical and doesn’t believe in any of those things.” Through the course of the play, Eve gains some holiday cheer through Simon’s relentless faith. “Audiences are just gonna fall in love with this show,” predicts Wells. “If they don’t already believe in the magic and warmth of Christmas, after seeing this, they will.”
