Horsing Around

Now in its nineteenth year, the Mexican Rodeo Extravaganza brings a rich cultural tradition to life as part of the National Western Stock Show. Featuring complex roping artistry, bull fighting and bareback horse riding, the Mexican take on animal husbandry is one of great physical showmanship and festive pageantry.

More About

Jerry Diaz, a Texas-born champion charro, or traditional Mexican horseman, will highlight the event; he’s a world-renowned expert trick rider and a director of the National Western Stock Show. Diaz, whose family has been training and performing for more than 150 years, is a fourth-generation charro.

Along with livestock wrangling, today’s event includes mariachis, colorfully costumed dancers, and performances of the dangerous “Paso de la Muerte (Death Jump)” by charros from across the country and Mexico. The Mexican Rodeo Extravaganza runs today at 2 p.m. and again at 6:30 p.m. at the National Western Complex, 4655 Humboldt Street in Denver. Tickets are $27 to $60 and can be purchased at 303-297-1166, www.nationalwestern.com or the box office.
Sun., Jan. 13, 2 & 6:30 p.m., 2013
