The Politics of LEGOs

Warm Cookies of the Revolution, a community-growing endeavor dreamed up by Evan Weissman of Buntport Theater, is catching on and has everywhere to go in the new year; its simple idea of presenting points of view on community issues while doing something fun and sharing milk and cookies just makes it so easy and engaging and — just maybe — addictive. Tonight’s monthly session, Bring Your Government!, gives the floor to three diverse speakers with different viewpoints about how a government ought to be run: Colorado Senator Morgan Carroll, comedian Andrew Orvedahl and former independent mayoral candidate Thomas Wolf. Afterward, the audience will nosh and build a cooperative (one can only hope) city out of LEGOs.

It’s BYOL, or draw from the limited plastic-brick stash provided. And will magic happen? “Honestly, I think magic occurs on a daily basis in our community.” says Weissman. “Sit at a bar during a Broncos game and you’ve got grandmas fist-bumping gangbangers and day laborers buying drinks for lawyers! You never know what might come from some good old-fashioned LEGO building, especially after hearing three interesting people pitch you on something they’ve thought long and hard about.”

One thing’s for certain, though. You will walk away with food for thought and food in your stomach. “I’m not sure what people will take away from this,” Weissman adds. “I hope they have fun, and I hope they connect with a new person, and I hope they are inspired. Maybe even for a minute they’ll hark back to the days of being a kid, when you played with LEGOs and dreamed about what could be instead of always worrying about what was supposed to be.” Sounds like a plan.

Warm Cookies of the Revolution begins at 6:30 p.m. at Buntport Theater, 717 Lipan Street; admission is free, and open minds are a plus. Visit the Bring Your Government! Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/events/173529729437786/?suggestsessionid=16196405281357325132 for information.
