Cherry Manilow, a jammer for the Doom’s Daisies, and Pippi Skullknockings, who skates for the Red Ridin’ Hoods, are roller-derby rivals — not to mention rivals in the running for best nom de derby — and they’ll both step to the line tonight when the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls league opens its 2013 season.
“The Red Ridin’ Hoods beat the Doom’s Daisies for the league title last year, so this is a big rivalry, and that’s the team to beat this year,” says RMRG spokeswoman Meghan “Undertaker’s Daughter” Dougherty. “We have great talent on all of the home teams, and each team has some new skaters and some really talented transfers from other leagues, so there should be some pretty fierce competition this season.”
Local BMX crew Yellow Designs Stunt Team (of America’s Got Talent fame) will be providing halftime entertainment, and Dougherty says the after-parties for all five bouts taking place at the Fillmore Auditorium this season will be at Hamburger Mary’s, 700 East 17th Avenue.
Doors to the Fillmore, 1510 Clarkson Street, open at 6 p.m.; for tickets (starting at $17 plus fees, or $75 for a five-game season pass) and more information, visit www.rockymountainrollergirls.com. Feeling inspired after the bout? Don’t miss the league tryouts at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 10, at the RMRG War*House, 5725 East 39th Avenue (pre-register with an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org).
