Counter to the usual Valentine’s Day activities we all know and only some of us love, V-Day, the global activist movement started fifteen years ago today by Vagina Monologues playwright Eve Ensler, shines its light on a different aspect of love: respect for and solidarity with women who have been victims of rape and/or violence. Now the One Billion Rising call to action takes everything a step further by inviting women around the world to, in the words of the movement, “walk out, dance, rise up and demand an end to this violence.”
Ensler herself asked Pesha Rudnick, artistic director of LOCAL Theater Company, to participate, and to that end, LOCAL and six other female-run Boulder-area theater and dance companies are joining forces to host Dance, Baby, Dance!, an all-ages dance party — with a focus on kids — at Shine Restaurant & Gathering Place. “When we started V-Day, we had the outrageous idea that we could end violence against women,” Ensler has said. “Now we are both stunned and thrilled to see that this global action is truly escalating and gaining force.”
