Dancin’ Fools

The Denver Art Museum’s Untitled series is always an adventure in art appreciation, with its imaginative slates of hands-on cultural activities, demonstrations, entertainment and downright silliness. But until now, we don’t think it’s ever been dominated by a people-generated American Idol vibe.

That’s about to change when Untitled #54: Turf presents live auditions for 120 hopefuls vying to win a chance to don one of Chicago artist Nick Cave’s famous Soundsuits — remarkable wearable concoctions of fiber and found objects — for a performance in June, when Cave’s exhibition, Nick Cave: Sojourn, will be on view at the museum.

After an audition call was sent out earlier this month for volunteer dancers, all 120 slots were filled within three days, says spokes-woman Hope Grandon; hopeful entrants will be strutting out in small groups before Cave and a public audience in the DAM’s Ponti Building during the evening. They won’t be wearing Soundsuits in this round, of course, but Cave knows what he’s looking for. “He has only told us so far that he just wants people to ‘bring it,’” Grandon explains. “We don’t know exactly what this means, but we can say that you don’t necessarily have to be a trained dancer. He’s really just looking for a more positive energy.”

In between dance-offs, there will be plenty of other things to do, including playing art-inspired mini-golf on AstroTurf with eccentric-about-town Andrew Novick, a Joan and Charlie performance by Buntport Theater, and curator-led tours of the DAM’s new — and quietly spectacular — Georgia O’Keeffe exhibit; it all goes down from 6 to 10 p.m. at the DAM, 100 West 14th Avenue Parkway. All Untitled activities are included in the museum’s general-admission price of $3 to $13 (there’s also a two-for-one deal for students with cur-rent ID).
