As on their previous album, 2010's Mountain Bound, the Blue Canyon Boys mix some first-rate originals with a number of covers on their fifth release, Next Go 'Round. Early on, the guys stay with lively, foot-stomping bluegrass, then jazz it up on swinging numbers like "Heartaches Welcome" before slowing it down for Bill Monroe's "Sitting Alone in the Moonlight," which features lovely harmonies from the quartet. There's some fine singing on this disc, and the musicianship is top-notch. After releasing their last album, the Boys recruited master banjoist Chris Elliot, a founding member of Spring Creek, and he tears it up on a number of tracks here, including "Darling Allalee" and "Down Along the Cove." Guitarist Jason Hicks and mandolinist Gary Dark also deliver some fiery playing, while Drew Garrett's bass remains solid throughout.
