Plains Truth
After ten years, award-winning author Kent Haruf has returned to Holt — a fictional town in eastern Colorado, but one filled with simple truths. Haruf, a native of Colorado, grew up in a place like this, “out from Denver, away from the mountains, back onto the high plains: sagebrush and soapweed and blue grama and buffalo grass in the pastures, wheat and corn in the planted fields. On both sides of the highway were the gravel county roads going out away under the pure blue sky, all the roads straight as the lines ruled in a book, with only a few small isolated towns spread across the flat open country.”

The McPheron brothers are gone now — their ranch house empty — and in Benediction, Haruf introduces us to other residents of Holt: Young Alice, who is living with her grandmother next to Mary and Dad Lewis, who’s been diagnosed with terminal cancer and whose last days give rhythm to this otherwise timeless place.
