Celebrating the work of Theda Bara, Greta Garbo, Alla Nazimova and Crawford, the films chosen for Vamp highlight a classic style and the ability to turn a wordless feature from campy to critically acclaimed. Sometimes remembered as lacking seriousness and artistic depth, silent films can easily be dismissed as pre-Golden Age goofs: “People immediately write them off as some hokey pizza-parlor movie,” says Chris Loffelmacher, who heads up Fresh City Life programming for the DPL. But these picks are far from hokey, and Loffelmacher selected films like Our Dancing Daughters and mid-March finale Salomé to demonstrate just how artful and captivating they can be.
Our Dancing Daughters screens at 6:30 p.m. in the Level B2 Conference Center at the DPL’s central branch, 10 West Fourteenth Avenue Parkway. For more information, visit denverlibrary.org/fresh or call 720-865-1206.
Tuesdays, 6:30-9 p.m. Starts: March 5. Continues through March 19, 2013
