A Good Match

Though the U.S. Men’s National Team has gone to the FIFA World Cup every year since 1990, it has never been an easy road. That road will wind through Denver today when the U.S. plays Costa Rica in the second of ten World Cup qualifying games on the way to the final showdown in Brazil in 2014.

“The World Cup is the biggest and most exciting sporting event on the planet, and these games are critically important for the U.S. to actually get to participate,” says Colorado Rapids spokesman David Lindholm, adding that he suspects Denver was picked as a location in part because of its elevation. The U.S. team will be playing at high altitude in Mexico a few days later, so this will help players prepare. The last time a World Cup qualifier was held in the Mile High City was in 2008.
