The Rougher Sex

Battling the “softer sex” stereotype is the name of the game at “Full Contact,” tonight’s opening slot of the 2013 Feminism & Co. lecture series. The gathering will pair the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls with sports scholar Sarah Fields, aikido practitioner Harmony Hammond, and L.A. Jennings, an MMA fighter and trainer finishing up a Ph.D. in English literature. Together they’ll share the history of women’s participation in full-contact sports and their varied experiences in a world that is traditionally reserved for men.

Jennings will discuss her search for other feminist players in the arena of martial arts and how that ties in to her dissertation of the femme fatale character in detective fiction. “The only voices that were out there were talking about women learning self-defense, which is great and very worthwhile, but it’s very different from being an actual fighter,” says Jennings of her inspiration to write about her own experience as a fighter.
