The women of the Denver Roller Dolls suit up tonight for the opening bout of roller derby season, a Saturday-night double-header pitting the Electrocuties against Bruising Altitude and the Orange Crushers against the Shotgun Betties. Once a drama-driven, choreographed show, roller derby has transformed into a full-fledged sport, and year after year, Denver’s teams are among the best in the nation.
“It’s not like it was in the ’70s; it’s a full-contact sport, and we have to remain composed on the track,” says Electrocutie team member Lexie White, aka Faye Tall Blonde. White says that the women train several times a week in preparation for both local and national bouts, at the Roller Dolls’ home facility — affectionately known as the Glitter Dome. Tryouts are held three times a year, and women of all ages and athletic abilities are encouraged to show what they’ve got in a competitive but supportive athletic environment.
