Number Station

Lonely Tonight
Self-released

There's a bit of dusky psych-Americana flavor to this Number Station release, on songs like "Cinnamon and Cherries" and the title track. But the album's overall bluesy vibe is also given a bit of a jazzy atmosphere with some well-placed Rhodes piano. "Naughty" finds singer Kate Whysner breathily intoning in a smoky, sultry way, like Hope Sandoval circa So Tonight That I Might See. The incidental sounds before "Country Western Singer" and on "Tyro Gets Burned Pt. 1" create a bit of a spontaneous and informal air. "No Sound" builds up well, but the song's curiously out-of-place climaxes sound more rugged than suits this music, which is otherwise graceful, even elegant.
