The members of the Bra Brigade will march on Denver tonight, and they want your undergarments, ladies. The event, a sale and bra drive hosted by Birds and Belles Boutique, benefits Free the Girls, a nonprofit working to help victims of human trafficking in Africa. The store is collecting anything that supports, including bras, sports bras, camis and tank tops with built-in linings.
"It just makes sense to help women globally," says shop owner Kyla DeTienne, who works with several other nonprofits as well.
Because Birds & Belles deals mostly in secondhand apparel, DeTienne says that undergarments that are brought in to be traded or consigned often end up being donated because they don't fit the store's inventory criteria. But now the shop is a permanent drop-off location in Denver for Free the Girls, which usually only collects bras during events. So far, the boutique has gathered more than 200 bras; DeTienne hopes the Bra Brigade will take the total over 1,000.
The Bra Brigade runs from 6 to 9 p.m. at Birds & Belles, 1113 South Pearl Street. Champagne and cupcakes will be served, and shoppers will receive 10 percent off their purchases with the donation of a bra. Raffles throughout the evening will also raise funds for Free the Girls.
