Anyone could have predicted that the first Denver company to show McCraney’s work would be Curious Theatre, which is opening one of his earliest plays, The Brothers Size, this weekend and has cast it with three of the best actors in town: Damion Hoover, Cajardo Lindsey and Laurence Curry.
The play tells the story of two brothers — Ogun, who is working as a mechanic, and Oshoosi, just released from prison. There’s also a third and disruptive character, Elegba, Oshoosi’s friend from prison. All three are simultaneously realistic human beings and mythic figures. McCraney has been widely quoted as saying the play was “inspired by Yoruba life and traditions, steeped in Southern rhythms and cadences and seamed shut with the fire of urban music and dance.”
The Brothers Size opens tonight at 8 p.m. and continues through April 13 at Curious Theatre, 1080 Acoma Street; for tickets, visit www.curioustheatre.org or call 303-623-0524.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: March 9. Continues through April 13, 2013
