“The skate shop, for me as a kid, was always a place you go and check out the artwork on the bottoms of the boards,” says Rob McKendry of Park Hill Skates. “All of that stuff made the shop look like a gallery. That’s where I’m going with my shop.”
To that end, McKendry is turning his shop into a full-blown art gallery with Get a Grip, a show featuring artists ranging from big names in the skateboard scene to local kids from the Park Hill neighborhood. The display will be a diverse one: Not only will you see the kind of painted decks, grip-tape design and skate photography you might expect, but also unique pieces like McKendry’s own skateboard/guitar hybrid.

The show is more than just McKendry’s way of introducing himself and his business to the neighborhood, he says; it’s also a way to give back to the community. The donated artwork will be auctioned off via a silent auction, with proceeds going to Aurora Rise, which benefits victims of the Aurora shooting. The show opens at 5 p.m. today at Park Hill Skates, 2236 Oneida Street; admission is free. For more information, visit parkhillskates.com.
