The High Dive

As a hard-bodied, dedicated rock climber with a reputation for adventuring and writing about it, Steph Davis had no fear of high places. But after a breakup with her climber husband, she found herself left behind without a career, in the company of her dog, Fletch, searching for new meaning in a life gone sour. She found it in the sky: Davis gave up her last grip on the solid ground of rock climbing and took up skydiving and base-jumping, and now she’s written about it in a memoir titled Learning to Fly, which plays up the physical act of letting go as a metaphor for learning to fly alone. More a story of how her life was transformed by her free-floating pastime than one of the adventure itself, Learning to Fly might be compared to Cheryl Strayed’s Wild or Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love.
