For the Love of Colfax

One of the best things about Month of Photography, which officially kicks off today (though more than a few related shows quietly opened in February), is its mind-boggling variety. And that includes at least one happy marriage between the arts and business communities along the world’s longest continuous street: Colfax Avenue. The 40 West art district in Lakewood will unveil Traveling Route 40: Celebrating the Character of Colfax Avenue tonight from 5 to 8 p.m. at 40 West Gallery, 1560 Teller Street in Lakewood, where the roadway paean will be on view through March 17.

Yet another contingent of works opens today at the McNichols Building, 144 West Colfax, where they’ll stay through April 21. And from 40 West, Traveling Route 40 will go for a long joyride, making stops at various venues all along the length of our great white way, from Golden to Aurora, through the end of April.

“How can you go wrong when you celebrate Colfax?,” asks 40 West program manager Julie Byerlein. “It’s got the architecture, the history, the characters.” And it’s all explored in the split display of fifty artworks. “Some pieces are more historical in nature — from memory lane — and there are others that speak to the urban grit of Colfax. And each and every piece could in some way trigger a conversation or story; people might identify with an image, whether they had an experience at that location, or whatever. Any one of them could lead to a discussion about the past, present and future of Colfax, and if art can trigger a conversation about the future of Colfax, isn’t that exciting?”
