While members of various subcultures, from MMJ patients to juggalos, mingle in Civic Center Park during today's 4/20 event, vinyl geeks will be celebrating Record Store Day. Many will have been up all night waiting in line for their favorite music dispensary to open, dreams of the Flaming Lips' Zaireeka quadruple LP and Phoenix's “Entertainment” seven-inch dancing behind their eyes.
“It seems to get bigger and bigger every year,” says Twist & Shout Records co-owner Paul Epstein of the event, which celebrates the culture of independent record stores nationwide. Twist & Shout's bash will feature an in-store performance by singer-songwriter Steve Earle, DJ sets, local beer, BOGO coupons from Chipotle and, of course, loads of rare vinyl, which will be released specifically for Record Store Day. “Vinyl is definitely our biggest area of growth as a store; they at least match or beat our CD sales. It's been very instrumental in saving record stores, but while it's helped, we still need Record Store Day,” Epstein says.
