Nerds aren’t known for their extroversion and spontaneous wit, but over this Comic Con weekend, Impulse Theater will cast of spell of dork dominion over its monthly improv show, bringing in two stars from the gamer-comedy web series The Guild to perform some insider humor for the Orcs, Ewoks and Elektras that will temporarily overrun the city.
“Comic Con is a haven to unabashedly love stuff,” says Guild co-star Sandeep Parikh. “If you literally squeal with joy when you see an Optimus Prime high-fiving a Thundercat, you have nothing to be ashamed of. To me, it’s a place where the judgers are the weirdos. Nerds have been outcasts for so long, so how about instead of being exclusive ourselves, we take the high road and be unendingly inclusive? Anyone who wants to proclaim themselves a nerd is fine by me; I just started watching Dr. Who, so there are some that would consider me not applicable.”
A ten-year veteran of improv comedy, Parikh says the practice has “done so much for my confidence, not just on stage, but in meetings, interviews, dates — you name it. You begin to realize that the rules of improv directly apply to all interactions in life.”
The Impulse’s Effinfunny Improv Show begins at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the lower level of the Wynkoop Brewing Company, 1634 18th Street. Tickets are $18; for more information, visit impulsetheater.com.
