Pizza Time

Greasy Demos
Tender Moments

It's rare to find a free CD in the front of an independent record store that's worth more than a casual listen. Greasy Demos, by Pizza Time, was crudely recorded, it sounds blown out, and the music is raw, primitive stuff. There are no track titles on the cover or inside, and it looks like some snarky teenagers made the album art, including the skateboarding pizza on the back. Just the same, the fuzzy, trebly guitar work and the caveman-simple beats are undeniably and irresistibly catchy, and bear repeated listens. Was this record inspired by Lou Reed's Rock 'n' Roll Animal and where he was trying to go with that album? Or maybe the Standells? The Sonics? Probably, but it never quite sounds like it's ripping off any of them — and that's saying something in the crowded realm of garage rock today.
