Curious Theatre artistic director Chip Walton first saw the Tony Award-sweeping hit God of Carnage -- starring Marcia Gay Harden, Jeff Daniels, James Gandolfini and Hope Davis -- on Broadway a few years ago, and was immediately inspired by its sharp satire. Think of it as a contemporary Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, only with kids thrown in and a quartet of 21st-century parents all soaking in an acid bath of personal entitlement. Says Walton: "There's never been a truer line written in a critical review than Ben Brantley's opening sentence in his New York Times review: 'Never underestimate the pleasure of watching really good actors behaving terribly.'" He thought he could bring Yazmina Reza's "comedy of bad manners" to life with equally good results in Denver. “I felt super-confident at the time that with our great company, we could put together an all-star cast, like Denver's version of that Broadway cast,” he recalls.
And how: Curious’s production, which tops off the company's 2012-2013 season, stars Denver sluggers Dee Covington, Erik Sandvold, Karen Slack and Tim McCracken, a group that Walton says practically "grew up together" as artists. "It is a play about parents who are in their forties and have kids, and it couldn’t be a more spot-on time of life to deal with, especially in our company. It's truly a case of art reflecting life -- just totally what we're all going through and that comes up in so many of our conversations,” he adds. “I hope we do that more gracefully.”
