Pretty Kitties

It’s a long and winding road for Tails of the Painted Cats, a roving tour of locally created fiberglass cat sculptures that makes its way to the Festival of Felines today at the Cat Care Society. The annual fundraiser for the shelter begins months in advance, when a call for artists is made, sketches are chosen, and the feline-figured artwork begins to take shape. Beginning in May, the completed decorative creatures started a tour of the city that culminates in an auction in July hosted by CBS4 news anchor Ed Greene.

Today’s stop at the Cat Care Society brings the painted cats together with their real-life animal friends for an afternoon of snacks, face-painting and kitty-inspired origami. “It’s just a way that everyone can see them in one location, and it brings people into the shel-ter,” says Suellen Scott, development director at the Cat Care Society.

The Festival of the Felines runs today from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cat Care Society, 5787 West Sixth Avenue in Lakewood; it’s free and open to the public. For more information on the festival and a full schedule of the cats’ stops around the city, visit catcaresociety.org or call 303-239-9680.
