Get to the Point

“It’s one of those magical movies where you have Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze and Gary Busey in a story about surfing bank robbers,” says Karla Rodriguez, audience development manager for the Denver Film Society. “It sounds like it should be a shitty movie, but it’s actually amazing. It’s this crazy mix of the perfect bro movie made by a feminist director. When does that happen?”

It happened once — in Point Break, director Kathryn Bigelow’s breakout film about an undercover FBI agent who must surf his way into the inner circle of a thrill-seeking gang led by a guru-like father figure. Now it’s finally come to Film on the Rocks, a venue majestic enough to match its awe-inspiring power. And dudes, don’t worry about how to get your girlfriend to acquiesce to this most testosterone-fueled film event. Chances are good she’s just as stoked as you are.

“Oftentimes we try to find the perfect date movie that the girl wants to go to and the boy secretly enjoys. This is kind of the opposite of that,” Rodriguez says. “It’s the movie the boy thinks he’s dragging the girlfriend to, but she probably loves it more than the boy.”
