If you only see one vampire Western in your lifetime, make sure it’s Near Dark, the final film in this year’s Cruel Summer lineup at Crash 45. Starring a good chunk of the cast of Aliens and directed by future superstar Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty, Point Break), Near Dark features vampires who are more of a hard-riding biker gang than the seductive sophisticates of your typical vampire story.
“I’m not a huge vampire fan, but I just think it’s such a unique take on vampire film, and I think that’s why so many people dig it," says Theresa Mercado, the host of Cruel Summer. "It’s doing something different,” “It’s this kind of outlaw, rogue gang of vampires that wander, and they have this familial connection in the afterlife, if you will, of just trying to survive together. [Plus] Bill Paxton commits one of the goriest and most unique acts of murder that I’ve ever seen in a film.”
The free screening starts at 9 p.m. at Crash 45, 321 East 45th Avenue — but you’ll want to get there early to order drinks and food. As always, Mercado will be giving away custom handmade souvenirs to all attendees, and there will be a movie-themed drink special to help put you in the mood. For more info, visit tiny.cc/CSNearDark.
