A Mural Grows in Globeville

PlatteForum’s ArtLab projects usually involve resident artists working indoors with students to create a culminating installation and exhibit. But this summer, the nonprofit art-making machine branched out to work on a community project outside of PlatteForum’s usual boundaries, in collaboration with the Denver Urban Art Fund and city councilwoman Judy Montero. Prominent Denver street artist Jolt, of Guerilla Garden, was given the task of mentoring a group of ArtLab students, who took to the streets themselves to create a mural celebrating the history and changing face of the Globeville neighborhood, on the north wall of the I-70 underpass at 46th Avenue and Lincoln Street.

The south wall is getting a new look, too, thanks to Anthony Garcia and the Birdseed Collective, and there’s hope that more murals will join those two on the structure in the future, says PlatteForum’s Trish Thibido. “The Globeville community was wanting a mural project started in the community in preparation for Jimmy Carter’s visit to Denver in October,” Thibido adds. “We all came together, and they asked us to do this site. So far, I believe this is the first mural to be painted on CDOT property.”
