Madonna, already famous as a pop star, found a new level of fame with her breakout film Desperately Seeking Susan, in which she played a character similar to her music persona. In the classic ’80s romp, Madonna’s quirky New York party girl is accidentally snatched by Roberta, a bored housewife played by Rosanna Arquette.
“Never before has a film using a pop star more encapsulated what that pop star was — even though it wasn’t written with Madonna in mind,” says Keith Garcia, former programming manager for the Sie FilmCenter, who arranged for the film to be screened tonight and tomorrow night as part of the theater’s Watching Hour series. But the character was so intrinsically Madonna, Garcia says, that no role she ever took on following Susan lived up to that perfect performance.
This weekend’s showing also signals the end of an era: After a decade with the FilmCenter and the Denver Film Society, Garcia is leaving to take a job with the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Littleton. But the Watching Hour is sticking around, and Garcia encourages fans of the cult-film series to stay tuned while programming gets revamped.
