You Are What You Eat

Denver attorney, author and well-regarded politico Adrian Miller has led not only a colorful life, but a delicious one: His gigs include moonlighting as a certified barbecue judge. Also a member of the Southern Foodways Alliance, an organization dedicated to the preservation and historical documentation of Southern-style cooking, the culinary scholar knows a thing or two about food. More specifically, soul food. His new book, Soul Food: The Surprising Story of an American Cuisine, One Plate at a Time ($30, University of North Carolina Press), puts the art and cultural life of African-American chow in sometimes-unexpected perspective, and it’s just the first in a series of books he hopes to write on different aspects of the subject.
