Two-Wheel Circus

For those not familiar with New Belgium Brewing's annual touring Tour de Fat celebration, the sight of local bicyclists parading down 17th Avenue from City Park in an array of costumes both silly and inspired might seem a little peculiar. But that's how it is at the Tour de Fat, a daylong circus of a festival that features brews, but is really all about the bikes — and having fun. The parade is just the kickoff for the annual event, which, when it snakes its way back to the park, features live music, comedy, games, contests, the yearly car-for-bike swap and lots of the aforementioned beer on tap. And though the Tour de Fat itself is free, beer sales will benefit Bike Denver and the Denver Cruisers.

"This is the chance to see world-class entertainment in your own back yard with a beer in hand, while you raise money for bike advocacy," says Tour maven Matt Kowal. That's a win-win situation."

The Tour de Fat parade rolls out at 11 a.m. from the main stage, near 21st Avenue and York Street in City Park, and festivities continue there afterward, through 5 p.m.; for more information, visit newbelgium.com/events/tour-de-fat/denver.
