Film Queens

Drag and Broadway have been in a long-term relationship since maybe the beginning of musical theater, if not time, and the beautiful music they make together builds to a glittery, madcap crescendo in Priscilla Queen of the Desert: The Musical, an adaptation of the 1994 Academy Award-winning film. Priscilla first burst onto the stage in Sydney in 2006 before making its way to Broadway, carried on a rainbow of big, heavily costumed production numbers featuring such disco anthems as “It’s Raining Men” and “I Will Survive.”

Now the touring version is stopping over in Denver, feathers and all, bringing a modicum of flash and bravado, with cast members Wade McCollum, Scott Willis and Bryan West as three friends driving a glamoured-up bus across the Outback on their way to a drag-show gig, and Joe Hart as the literal straight man, Bob. As fans of the movie and show will attest, there are moments both glorious and tearful along the way, as the boys meet hardships and discrimination on the road. Still, the spectacular costumes in this show are Tony Award-winning and might be the best reason to go.
