The Yawpers

Good Songs/Shitty Versions
Self-released

Armed with just two acoustic guitars, a trap kit and Nate Cook's zealous singing, the Yawpers have been known to kick up a hell of a racket not only on stage, but also in the studio, as heard on last year's Capon Crusade. That same musical energy is more than apparent on the new Good Songs/Shitty Versions, a six-song record primarily made up of covers, starting with Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion," which the Yawpers turn into a raucous, fueled-up and twanged-out romp. On "Suspicious Minds," meanwhile, Cook injects the occasional Elvis drawl, sounding like a much more nasal version of the King. Cook and company also offer up a fairly faithful version of Ween's "Booze Me Up and Get Me High" and take a rollicking ride through the Coasters' "Yakety Yak" before burning through Motörhead's "Ace of Spades" with a fury.
