Positive Charge

For the uninitiated, Baby Hair — happening tonight at Mutiny Information Cafe — is a place for eccentrics and misfits, a gathering that began last year as a monthly open mic and celebrated a safe space for the queer community to share poetry, live music, short films, diary entries and more.

“What I wanted to do was have more intellectual and art-related queer events in Denver, because I don’t think there are many,” says Sara Century, co-founder of the night. “Intellectualism in general is kind of looked down on, and I like Baby Hair because it celebrates intellectualism.”

Century has since moved to the West Coast but makes frequent trips back to Colorado. Her creative partner, Erica Adams, is still stationed here, and the two are determined to keep Baby Hair alive. Tonight signals the showcase’s return after a bit of a hiatus, as well as a format change. The curated event will feature music from Crab Lab and Death in Space; readings from Magee Headley and contributors to Teeth Dreams magazine; and a surprise PowerPoint presentation from Century and Adams.

While the focus of Baby Hair’s lineup is female artists and performers in the queer community, anyone is welcome to participate or be a part of the audience. Century notes that Baby Hair’s intellectual bent is always balanced with an overt sense of humor. “We’re still making dick jokes,” she promises. “We’re just making smarter ones.”
