"It's time for other parts of the city to share the burden." Why? This area has for years been the center for the homeless population to congregate. Prior to Lodo becoming Lodo, this part of town was still bum central. After all the efforts to build around it and throw shiny parks in the way, it is still what it was. The only way that changes is if the mission is gone from there, but that isn't happening. Cause and effect. If we "share the burden" and basically move it to another part of the town, we will be having this same discussion with another group of folks. Simply trying to move folks away from that area hasn't worked and wont be solved by building another place to congregate somewhere else in the city. I agree with the fact the city needs to be more proactive in assisting with the mental health and substance abuse issues that many of the homeless face to encourage rehabilitation, but moving them to another park or part of the city does nothing. Like the previous poster said, move if this isn't something you want to deal with.
