Denver has been presenting the Mayor’s Awards for Excellence in Arts & Culture since 1986 — but this year the city added a new twist, asking people to vote for their favorites in two categories. Tonight, the winners of those contests will be announced at a free awards ceremony that runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Studio Loft above the Ellie Caulkins Opera House. The event will also honor four already announced winners: Wonderbound artistic director Garret Ammon, filmmaker Darla Rae, Cafe Cultura and the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival. And there will be performances by Alexis Vigil, the Colorado Chamber Orchestra, Curious Theatre and the Spirituals Project.
But the real entertainment could be the announcement of the two People’s Choice awards. Nominated in the Unique Collaborations category are Rocky Mountain PBS, KUNC and KUVO/KVJZ, which joined forces this year; the Art Students League of Denver and the Denver Public Library, which worked together on a mobile book cart; and Historic Denver, Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods and Upper Colfax, for the Upper Colfax Victorian Homes Tour.

Then there's the Creative Neighborhood category, which pits two neighbors against each other: the Arts District on Santa Fe and the nearby Golden Triangle Museum District and its Plein Air Festival. It’s too late to vote, but it’s not too late to see the work that resulted from this year’s Colorado Plein Air Festival; the show just opened on November 12 at the DPL’s Central Branch, 10 West 14th Avenue Parkway. The show includes views from across the state; "We support all the arts districts," says GTMD director Robin Riddel-Lima. Catch that, then catch Mayor Michael Hancock honoring the winner.
