Motel Flicks

“I had a dream, as a young person, that there was somebody burying humans, upright, in their garden,” recalls Cruel Autumn horror-movie series host Theresa Mercado. “Their heads were above the ground, but they couldn’t talk, for some reason.” It wasn’t until years later, while working in a video store, that she came across Motel Hell and realized it hadn’t been a dream. “I’m like, ‘Holy shit! It wasn’t a dream.’ I’d seen this movie and not remembered any of it except this crazy image of this farmer who buries people,” she says.

Now Mercado is closing out the Cruel Autumn series with the film, an oddball artifact of ’80s horror that works as a sort of sampler platter of horror’s greatest hits. “The person who made it clearly said, ‘I’m a horror fan, and I’m going to put all my favorite movies into it,’” Mercado says. “It’s just such a fun, bizarre, weird movie.”
