The holidays can be overwhelming. Shopping for presents. Wrapping presents. Listening to your kids complain about the presents you bought them. It’s enough to make anyone say bah humbug.
Which is why the organizers of Cabaret Otaku’s Holiday Lights plan to play around with and poke fun at tradition, rather than making attendees of the pageant dress up and take things seriously. “It’s sheer fun,” promises Cabaret Otaku’s Christina Marzano Haystead. “Even though a lot of us are classical musicians, we wanted to step away from all of that and just lampoon what everybody feels about the holidays, especially the commercial side.”
In that spirit, expect a variety-show approach incorporating music, dance, skits and, on Friday, an improv troupe. It’s all based in the kind of Christmas traditions you know and love, but skewed with an irreverent sense of humor and the desire to let everyone, performers included, blow off some holiday steam.
