Red and Blue

“Being Santa in the year 2013 is probably not as much fun as it was way back when every child was happy with a train and a doll and a ball,” muses Winnie Wenglewick of Denver’s Dangerous Theatre. “Now kids need to have things like PlayStations and Nintendos and iPhones and all kinds of stuff.”

Imagining the modern frustrations of the not-so-jolly old elf is the basis for Wenglewick’s new production, #FirstWorldSanta, an irreverent holiday show in which St. Nick deals with the 21st-century concerns of PETA cracking down on the treatment of his reindeer and being diagnosed with celiac disease and thus unable to eat Christmas cookies.

“Christmas is that time that you just need to go out and laugh and ease the tensions of the holidays,” says Wenglewick, who will play the part of Father Christmas. “If you’re easily offended, don’t come: This is our Christmas trainwreck of a show.”
