The People’s Podcast

For most of the year, These Things Matter podcast hosts Taylor Gonda and Kevin O’Brien stick to a tried-and-true script: They interview a guest on his or her obsession and crack wise in a studio, then package it up for online consumption by listeners who sometimes find themselves yelling at the sound waves in disagreement. But just this once, because it’s the day after Christmas and an antsy six days before New Year’s Eve, the broadcasting duo thought it would be fun to bring the studio to the listeners and invite them to take part in a looser, more participatory show. After all, who could argue with that? And because their geekiest fans know that the podcast’s title is a reference to the John Cusack flick High Fidelity, they decided to dedicate their These Things Matter Night celebration at Lost Lake Lounge to the actor who uttered those words. So if you go, be prepared to meet the mike for on-the-spot interviews about personal Cusack fixations and the difference he’s made in your life, because...well, these things matter.

“This will be the only event this year where people will be overstimulated by John Cusack,” O’Brien says. “No matter what, you’ll be getting Cusack-inspired media. This is for the real obsessives, and that’s what this podcast all about.” To that end, the evening will feature Cusack music, movies and a photo booth to keep you entertained while O’Brien and Gonda wander through the crowd gathering interviews. The finished podcast, based on the audience’s personal musings, will air on New Year’s Day.

Party with These Things Matter starting at 8 p.m. tonight at Lost Lake, 3602 East Colfax Avenue (visit lostlakelounge.com); listen to the podcast on January 1 at thesethingsmatterpodcast.com or access it via iTunes or libsyn.com.
