Describing the “personality” of a neighborhood without sounding like a pompous academic can be tricky. But for local artist Robert Bell and the folks at MegaFauna art and clothing store, the temptation to articulate what makes our city’s streets so vibrant and eclectic was too tempting.
“In the Denver landscape, we have these areas like LoDo and South Broadway and Santa Fe that we felt could be represented well by certain contemporary icons that resonate with the demographics that are drawn to those areas,” says MegaFauna owner John McCaskill, who will be rolling out Bell’s Denver Divas collection — a series of prints that match Denver neighborhoods with pop icons — tonight.
“Originally, Robert had done an Elvis print for Colorado in general. And then that led into the Britney Spears for Lakeside, followed by Amy Winehouse for Colfax, Liberace for Capitol Hill, Rihanna for Five Points, and a few others. There are different ways of identifying the local vibe and growth in these areas and how it resonates with people who are moving to Colorado. Itʼs a good way of looking at it without this intimidating environment around art.”
