Anyone can catch American Hustle or Dallas Buyers Club on the big screen, but there aren't a lot of opportunities to see the short films that have been nominated for the 86th Academy Awards, which will air on March 2. So film buffs may want to check out the Oscar Nominated Short Films 2014, compilation programs that will open at the Chez Artiste in Denver on Friday, January 31. Now in its ninth year, the programs showcase the Live Action, Animation and Documentary nominees as three separate theatrical events (though the Documentary series won't be available here).
"This year's Oscar Nominated Short Films originate from all parts of the globe, representing the pinnacle of filmmaking from Japan, UK, Denmark, France, Luxembourg, Spain, Finland, UAE, Yemen, Canada and the United States," according to a statement from the producers of the series. "A fast-growing genre of film entertainment, [the program] has become a key fixture of the awards season while breaking box office records for the genre with each year." Last year's release grossed nearly $2.2 million, up 28 percent over the previous year.
The Live Action nominees are: Aquel No Era Yo (That Wasn't Me), directed by Esteban Crespo; Avant Que de Tout Perdre (Just Before Losing Everything), directed by Xavier Legrand and Alexandre Gavras; Helium, directed by Anders Walter and Kim Magnusson; Pitääkö Mun Kaikki Hoitaa? (Do I Have to Take Care of Everything?), directed by Selma Vilhunen and Kirsikka Saari; and The Voorman Problem, directed by Mark Gill and Baldwin Li.
The Animated nominees are: Feral, directed by Daniel Sousa and Dan Golden; Get a Horse!, directed by Lauren MacMullan and Dorothy McKim; Mr. Hublot, directed by Laurent Witz and Alexandre Espigares; Possessions, directed by Shuhei Morita; and Room on the Broom, directed by Max Lang and Jan Lachauer. For ticket prices and showtimes, go to landmarktheatres.com.
