Shopping for your Valentine can be a cliché-ridden task, but there’s a way to do it without browsing through the ugly ties or skimpy lingerie that your partner — of either gender — will never wear. At the Perfect Petal’s Love Me Sweet Soiree -- a swanky two-part shopping evening that caters to women shoppers from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and then shifts its focus to the gents from 6:30 to 8 p.m.-- each half will offer complimentary booze, boutonniere or bow-tie mini-tutorials, and curated shopping opportunities. And the gender-tailored entertainment includes Jonny Barber, the “Velvet Elvis,” crooning for the ladies, while burlesque queen Vivienne VaVoom bumps and grinds for the guys.
In Barber’s case, the evening also serves as an official coming-out for his stage alter ego, who’s just emerged from a two-year retirement to swivel his hips in Denver again as an “emulator,” rather than an “impersonator,” of the King.
“It’s the fans,” explains Barber. “The demand was still there. I kept getting calls for gigs, and the ladies were camping out in front of my house.” Well, maybe. “My walk with death made me a wiser man,” he adds. “I’ve become more appreciative of what Elvis still gives to his fans in the world, and that I can do it — I look at that as a gift to share.” Though he’ll go solo for tonight’s event, Barber will also perform with a band for a pre-Valentine’s show on February 13 at the Soiled Dove (see facebook.com/thevelvetelvis).
Drop by the Perfect Petal, 3600 West 32nd Avenue, to shop during your designated time; afterward, redeem stickers available at the event for $5 infused margs and green-chile nachos down the road at the nearby El Camino eatery. Go to theperfectpetal.com for information.
