déCollage

Extended Play
Foxy Circus Records

The latest EP from déCollage feels like a collage-pop, Animal Collective-esque, psychedelic version of Stevie Wonder's 1979 weirdo masterpiece Stevie Wonder's Journey Through "The Secret Life of Plants" — except that Reed Fuchs and company probably had none of that in mind when they made it. Rather, the players were able to evoke a sense of mystery and wonder as pure as that of a beautifully enigmatic dream that stays in your thoughts for minutes, even hours, after you wake up. "Birth Side" is imbued with an inner brightness, while "Death Side" is streaked through with melodic lines that warp off unexpectedly. "Tesseract" employs a recording technique that makes the vocals sound at times like they're coming from different directions, and "LAtronic" ebbs and flows with delicate atmospheres, like a fairy-tale lullaby.
