Data Point

We live in the era of Big Data, and business and political decisions are increasingly driven by that fact. But what does that mean to the typical small-business owner?

“The problem is that data in and of itself isn’t enough for the vast majority of businesses, especially small- and medium-sized businesses that don’t have the time, or even the skill sets, to do data-analysis work,” explains Brian Gryth, program manager for the state’s business intelligence center. “We needed to make some kind of tool set to be able to do this, and that’s where Go Code Colorado comes in.”

The Go Code Colorado initiative is an attempt to put publicly available data to work for Colorado businesses, the first state-level program of its kind nationwide. Starting with the kick-off event tonight, Go Code aims to team developers up with the business community to build tools to put data to work.

“We worked with the business community to identify five key problem areas they’re facing related to making business decisions,” Gryth says. “Now we’re going to take those five problems, take the data that we’re releasing, and have the app developers try to design apps that help address those problems.”

Get started tonight at 6 p.m. at the History Colorado Center, 1200 Broadway. Admission is free, but you’ll need to preregister online at gocode.colorado.gov.
