Today through Sunday, Boulder’s LOCAL Theater Company will hold its Lab 2014, during which some of the area’s best-known actors, including Jamie Ann Romero, Candy Brown, Steven Cole Hughes and Patty Figel, will read new plays by James McLindon, Kyle Warren and Alison Carey. Managing director Megan Mathews says these plays were chosen in part to illustrate the writing process: “One is quite close to production-ready; another is at its midpoint, having had a reading already and having been through multiple rewrites; and one is basically a first draft, brand-spanking-new.”
The Lab provides playwrights with “stellar casts to breathe life into their words so they can hear what’s working and what isn’t, and offers them something totally unique to Boulder — the audiences here,” she adds. “We’ve found that Boulder audiences are ideal for new-play development: They’re intelligent and curious, and genuinely interested in helping playwrights grow their plays. We ask our playwrights to come to the Lab with specific questions for the audience; when they leave, they head back into the writing process better prepared to problem-solve. “But we’re also gathered to have fun,” she adds. “We take our parties very seriously.”
The launch party begins tonight at 5:30 p.m. at Todd Reed, 2015 Pearl Street. There will be music, wine, beer, and food from Hapa Sushi. Passes for the weekend are $65 in advance, $70 at the door, and $36 for students. Call 303-443-8696 or go to localtheatercom-pany.org for information.
