What could delight an Anglophile more than spending an afternoon sipping tea and reading Jane Austen? Try three cups of tea and the BBC’s 1995 adaptation of her autumnal novel, Persuasion — a witty tale of heartache and love sure to titillate the prim and proper romantic in us all.
“With Persuasion, we have the usual trappings: Girl meets boy, girl loses boy because he is poor, boy gains wealth and comes back for girl, but now, there’s another girl in the mix,” says Keith Garcia, creative manager at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. And even the most soulless Jane Austen detractors will fall in love at first bite with the vittles: three varieties of organic tea, bacon-cheddar scones with chive butter, cucumber-and-onion sandwiches, and hazelnut shortbread with chocolate. As Rae Wiseman of the Denver-Boulder chapter of the North American Jane Austen Society says: “I think one of the reasons there are so many present-day retellings of Austen’s novels is that her stories are timeless.”
