Though last year’s event was overshadowed by the non-fatal shooting of three people in the crowd, the 420 Rally at Civic Center Park event was hitherto known as a peaceable gathering at which participants joined a massive smokeout in protest of cannabis prohibition. A yearly tradition for Denver’s most blunted since 1993, the rally expanded significantly in 2008, taking on an activist bent by acquiring permits and scheduling keynote speakers and circulating petitions.
That might be overstating things a bit, but there’s no overstating how popular the event is: It has expanded this year into a two-day music festival, beginning today and continuing tomorrow. Artists appearing include Wyclef, B.O.B., the Expendables, Zion I, Bass Physics, Peplove, Sunsquabi, Pries, MTHDS, Rumtum, DJ Cavem, Rose Quartz and FL. According to organizers, there will also be “speeches from leading authorities within the industry, a food market championing alternative marijuana products as well as a local artists pavilion.”
