MCA Denver’s Huevos Rancheros series is more than just a chance exchange of culture, says museum programming director Sarah Kate Baie; after three years of exhibits and programs with Guadalajaran artists, it’s becoming more of a bridge. “Guadalajara is a city a lot like Denver in many ways,” Baie notes. “It’s also a city in Mexico, and there are a lot of amazing things happening there. But when you go visit, you realize that people live very differently from how we live in Denver. This program is to expose Denverites to parts of Mexican culture they might not otherwise have known about.”

This year’s lineup of lectures has been engineered by artist Jorge Méndez Blake, whose installation “Project for a Park Library (Aerial View Large),” a room-sized vinyl print that envisions a library as a landscape, is currently on view at the MCA. Tonight’s event, the last of three programs curated by Blake, is billed as an “Architect and Cartoonist Comic Jam” and brings together two Guadalajarans from seemingly unrelated disciplines. But it turns out that architect Sergio Ortiz and cartoonist Jose Ignacio Solorzano (aka JIS) are both concerned with the everyday life of Guadalajara — although from different perspectives. So their program will be a mash-up of realities, with Ortiz discussing the relationship between housing and culture while JIS improvises drawings to illustrate the talk.
