Although Mommie Dearest has become a cult favorite, its star wants nothing to do with the 1981 film. Faye Dunaway, who plays a raving, cold-cream-wearing Joan Crawford in the tale of tyrannical motherhood, once said that the film effectively ended her career, then refused to elaborate. But there’s one person who will discuss the filming of the campy classic: actress Rutanya Alda, who plays suffering maid Carol Ann and is currently writing a book about the experience.
Alda will be in town today for a brunch, screening and discussion of the over-the-top flick, hosted by Denver Public Library’s Fresh City Life. “The thing that I find really intriguing when watching the film is trying to figure out whether the people who were making this film, did they know what they were doing?” wonders Fresh City Life’s Chris Loffelmacher. “Some cult films, like Rocky Horror Picture Show, seem to be done with a wink, but I’m not so sure with Mommie Dearest.”
