Failure isn’t necessarily a bad thing, says Laura Ann Samuelson, dancer and artistic director of Hoarded Stuff Performance. “I find when I talk to artists that I’m interested in, the things that are actually really interesting about their narratives are the things that didn’t quite work out, because it led them somewhere else.” Samuelson’s newest piece, an experimental dance performance titled Everything Is In, rebels against a culture that only celebrates success.
In her process for creating the piece, Samuelson decided to use every single idea that came up rather than dismiss thoughts because they seemed impossible or silly. What emerged is a show that uses everything from soft-shoe to breaking the fourth wall to delve into the idea of failure and learning how to say goodbye. “We’re at a place culturally where very human processes are actually starting to become failures in some way. We don’t want people to get old anymore,” explains Samuelson. “I’m interested in using this performance as a space to create more interest in being real about the inherent failures in the things we do all the time that we don’t feel like we’re allowed to acknowledge.”
